While I was writing and researching PAINT THE WIND, my Western epic, I was also seriously involved in both Martial Arts and alternative healing, studying with Dr. John Upledger, a Chinese doctor, several hands-on healers, and – maybe most importantly of all – a visionary Native American Medicine Man, Joseph Rael, aka Beautiful Painted Arrow. All of whom got me hooked on studying the healing properties of gemstones.
All of the disciplines taught by each of my teachers seemed to intersect at honing the ability to work with energy fields. Crystals seemed to do that… I just wasn’t sure how.
I’d seen some remarkable healings happen with the help of crystals and I could feel their varied energies quite clearly, yet I couldn’t wrap my rational mind around why these stones should be able to affect us so dramatically.
So I took my doubts to Beautiful Painted Arrow, a hereditary medicine teacher for the Utes and Picuris people, and I asked him what he thought.
He asked if I could feel the energy coming from precious and semi-precious stones and I said I could, but I was afraid it all might be my overactive imagination at work because it really didn’t make sense to me.
He laughed and said I must make a trip to the Colorado School of Mines and ask to be taken to the Black Room. After that, he said, we would discuss the subject again.
I didn’t know this then, but before returning to his tribe to assume his hereditary shaman role, Joseph had spent time exploring the White Man’s World and had an engineering degree.
Off I went to The Colorado School of Mines, and I was ushered into a room with a raised platform at one end that was filled with rocks and stones – gem stones, semi-precious crystals and plain old ordinary rocks you might dig out of your garden.
Nothing special about any of it that I could see…
Then the incandescent lights were turned off and black lights were turned on and the most spectacular visual anomaly met my bedazzled gaze.
Energy was shooting out of every stone! A bedazzling light show of orange, yellow, cobalt, green, white, you name it, was shooting out from every one of these stones, including the dreary grey escapees from somebody’s garden! The brilliant colors were like small firework displays, sprays of astounding colors radiating upwards and outwards, like shooting stars.
My guide laughed heartily at my response and confusion. It obviously wasn’t the first time he’d seen such.
He turned the plain lights back on and everything returned to normal.
“What just happened?” I asked awestruck. “What did I just see?”
“What you saw was radiation that’s not visible to the naked eye,” he explained. “It’s always there, just hidden in plain sight.”
Beautiful Painted Arrow was right. I’ve never looked at a stone since then without knowing the miraculous energies it contains.
I regret having been a Doubting Thomas, but what I saw in that room opened the doors of my mind. I wish every child in the world could have the same opportunity before rational thinking completely closes the door on astounding empirical knowledge.
