You Know How Sean Was…she said
Divine Understatement
I had the thrill of meeting Mrs. Sean O’Casey while researching An Excess of Love. A lifelong fan of her husband’s work, I was quite over-awed.
I could remember being a child whose two bookish parents acquired the O’Casey four volume autobiography and were reading and discussing it in detail with the kind of blissful relish only a true book lover can exhibit. I Knock at the Door, their favorite although they loved them all. So to me, actually meeting her was beyond the beyond, as my Aunt Helen would say.
Love Letter
Especially so because my Cancerian soul had been touched so deeply by the last letter he’d written her before his death. I thought it was the most romantic I’d ever read. So, I asked her how it felt to have been the recipient of one of the greatest love letters ever penned in the English language.
“Ah well,” she said. “You know how Sean was. He had a great way with words.”
Whoever said that the Irish are prone to hyperbole obviously didn’t know Mrs. O’Casey!
