I Meet One of the Gods from The Playground!

The Playground of the Gods had just been released when a fabulous friend who has been called the Barbara Walters of China, threw an amazing dinner party for me at her Sutton Place home to celebrate the launch.

All sorts of fun celebrities were invited, including a billionaire mogul from Australia who was seated next to me at dinner.

“I bought six copies of your book,” he whispered conspiratorially, once we were

seated.  He seemed eager to tell me his story and was scrutinizing me as if trying to figure something out.

“How lovely, but why?” I answered laughing.  “Most people don’t buy 6 of the same book, more’s the pity!”

“To give to the boys, of course,” he replied as if he thought I was being disingenuous.  “We just can’t figure out when you were with us on my island.”

In the next few astonishing minutes of conversation, I learned that he not only owned a pleasure island much like Mora Utu, (which I had made up out of whole cloth) but the coordinates for latitude and longitude (which I’d simply plucked from a map of the South Pacific) were almost identical to his.  He said I’d nailed the reason men like him had private islands, too.  (If you’re wondering, it’s to have as much sex as possible, as far from their wives as possible.)  He said his island was exactly as I’d imagined it, minus a few untimely deaths!

Nothing I said could convince him I had created The Playground of the Gods as a work of fiction and not because I’d been there.  As my hostess later corroborated his continuing disbelief, she and I have had a good deal of laughter over it ever since.

And yes, he did invite me for a “return” visit to his island, but I declined the invitation. Maybe I shouldn’t have.  Maybe Part II of my story is waiting there to show itself!
